Ninth Flight. [mid-day video/action for goldenrod city.]

[Anyone familiar with the gym in Goldenrod will know what's up. Because that sure is wailing going on in the background.

...Oddly enough, though, there are also the sounds of:
1 Charmander snoring,
1 Swablu chirping, and
1 tiny viking arguing with a giant dragon.]

What do you mean you can fly?

[Sorry, Whitney, but your blubbering is being ignored in favor of dealing with the most exasperated Salamence ever. This was so much more important than badges.]

Yeah, okay, I get that you can 'fly' fly, but you're telling me that you have the ability to use the move Fly. As in 'carry me through the skies' Fly. Why didn't you tell me?

[Adder huffs noisily before flapping her wings to shoot a hard gust of air at him. HICCUP, SHE'S BEEN TRYING TO DO THAT FOR TWO WEEKS. You've just been focusing on ~alternative flight methods~ with Carmen Sandiego. Really, though, she wouldn't be annoyed if you weren't making such a big deal out of it. Just be happy already.]

Yeah, yeah... [Hiccup sighs, apparently giving in for now, before wandering over to slide the gear out from under the drowsy Charmander's claws.] Just would have been nice to know... Wait. Stormfly, didn't you just turn this off?

[...So it wasn't the battle he wanted recorded that was broadcast. Great.]

[HERP DERP, you're totally talking about Stormfly, right? He's...focused on other things.]

[It takes a while. Even if he's done trying to argue with Adder, Hiccup still has no idea how to interact with emotional girls has to wait out the tears.

But he did notice Carmen in the stands during the battle, and that fact made winning all the better--even if she didn't see him as a disappointment or a failure, Hiccup still wanted to impress her with whatever skill possible. Which is why he's grinning like a fool when she congratulates him.]

Did you know that Salamence learned Fly on its own?

[In fairness, in all the red she wears, she's not precisely difficult to notice. And she certainly is impressed, both with his team and with his battlefield skills — she always takes a sort of personal pride in the activities of the kids she finds interesting.

But his enthusiasm makes her smile in return, albeit not quite as hugely and foolishly as his is.]

I do have one of my own. It's a fascinating story, though, isn't it? The flightless dragon so desperate to take to the skies that it simply sprouts wings of its own.

[He nods, thinking back to their first conversation. That story had been one (of the many) reasons he had taken to Carmen quickly.]

I remember--I just didn't think it meant Adder could use Fly... I thought that was only an HM move.

[Arghhhh, just when he thinks he has all the mechanics down, Johto throws him for a loop.]

I admit, I did, too. If I hadn't been keeping up with the information in the Gear, I would never have guessed there'd be an exception, either.

[Implicit lesson to be learned: knowledge is power, young Viking.]

For the rest of them, you'll need to beat the gym in Cianwood City. It's a nice town, though. I think you'll enjoy it.

[He'll keep up on the gear from now on, promise. He probably should have been doing that after Kiki's last post anyway, to keep track for evolutions...]

I was planning on Cianwood being my second badge, but I figured that since I was staying here for a while, I should challenge Whitney. [He is half regretting it. All those tears... On the other hand, FLYING.] I'll still get there soon, though. After all, I promised Laila that we would fly together one day. It wouldn't be fair to back out, now that Adder can fly.

It's a long way from here to Cianwood on foot, anyway. The road winds up through Ecruteak and down to Olivine before you even get close. Flying on Teri or the Baron, I could make from here to there in a day or so of traveling; going by land with Vicky, it'd be more than a week.

Though you'll need a good map if you plan to go by air. Especially if you're looking for a city you've never flown to before.

Wow...

[That really...is a long way. If Hiccup had actually needed to make the trip from New Bark Town to Goldenrod in a sensible manner, the distance probably wouldn't have amazed him so much, but all in all, his life in Johto had been pretty pampered.]

I've been making sure to pick up maps along the way...but so far, I haven't been many places. [And now because youthful curiosity!] What kind of pokemon are Teri, the Baron, and Vicky anyway?

[And this is why the first thing she ever stole in Johto was a complete map of the area, courtesy of one of the Pokemon Professors. The minute she had the badges and capability necessary to fly, land travel abruptly became a thing of the past.]

I've got two of them with me. Teri's boxed at the moment — [Which is the unintentional fault of Coop and his aversion to birds.] — but I'll show you the others, if you like.

[Particularly since Hiccup will probably enjoy meeting the Baron, given that he is in fact a dragon. She pulls two balls off her belt and gives them a toss, calling out a Dragonite and a ~~suspiciously familiar~~ Arcanine.]

This is the Baron, my Dragonite. And Vicky is the Arcanine.

[Anyone who'd spoken to him just once would have expected Hiccup to immediately fawn over the Dragonite--and normally, he would have. But that is, indeed, a suspiciously familiar Arcanine... And the nagging feeling in his brain has got his eyes glued to her.]

[No. He doesn't even need to ask, even if the chances would be slim and unexpected. Hiccup was pretty good at spotting the differences from one pokemon to the next and this was definitely Ziva's Vicky. Hiccup kneels down, a smile beginning to twitch up at the edges of his mouth, and reaches out a hand for her.]

Hey, girl... How've you been?

Er... What's with the crying?

[Because he's totally clueless on the matters of Gym Leaders.]

Whitney'll cry whenever she loses... I guess I would feel bad, too, if I lost to trainers so much.

So I've heard. [This is one badge Rima definitely won't bother getting...]

...at least you don't have to travel to Cianwood now.

I probably will, anyway. I've got other pokemon that I'd like to have the opportunity of flying with, too. But the trip there will be faster.

... Aye, I suppose. But that still sounds pretty annoying. [Seems ill-fitting for a gym leader too.]

I haven't ever heard of a time she didn't cry...and I'm guessing that would be more newsworthy for plenty of the people here. [But yes...it is annoying, now that Hiccup's actually tuned in on the sobs. Come on, Whitney, he just wants his badge...] I've only ever fought Falkner before, but he had a weird quirk, too. Kept talking about how awesome his dad and his pokemon were.

And I guess learning to fly won't be an issue for you.

Perhaps it's to foster pity or something of that nature. Hoping you'll feel so bad for her that you won't take your badge. I doubt it works, but I would have to give her points for persistance if that were the case. [Poor Hiccup.]

Unless, of course, they all have the same sort of reactions with each battle.
