[Among the background bustle--familiar sounds for anyone who's set foot in a Pokemon Center--there's a small whine from an Eevee, almost like a prompt for Hiccup to speak. After another second or so, he does.]

Uh... Has anyone ever, uhmm. [There's another pause. How should he put this...] Lost...half their pokemon? [He clears his throat before continuing, quicker this time like an excuse.] I still have all their pokeballs, and those are registered to all of them still, according to the people at the Center. But I can't find them anywhere...

[Hiccup sighs, and there's a subtle clunk as he moves his hand to the 'gear to shut it off. Before he does, though, there's one last mumble.]

I can't believe this is happening again...

[He nods, not that Crow can see.]

I did, but... They don't seem to know anything, either. That, or they don't care...

[Only a few had been truly concerned about Hiccup's predicament.]

Great, so they found a reason and ditched me. That really helps.

[Oops, he's not exactly being cooperative right now...]

I guess... [Glum, gloomy glumster. But he does sound a little bit hopeful as he continues.] I can ask Carmen and Astrid if they can help. If all the ones that left are still together, they shouldn't be...too hard to find.

I...left to go check something in the Dragon's Den. I wasn't really expecting them to leave.

[Obviously.]

Not really... Or not that I noticed. Everything seemed pretty normal, to me.

Your brother may be sneaky, but that doesn't mean my pokemon have to be, you know.

[Unfortunately, Dragonese is a skill only possessed by the bookverse Hiccup. Still, it's pretty easy to guess what the first mime means, given who he's now positive is this pokemon's trainer. Carmen. Good.

But then bad, bad, bad, because that is indeed the saddest Charmeleon face ever and Hiccup immediately worries if he's somehow done something to upset Miles. Honestly, it wouldn't have surprised him. Maybe Miles was upset from being away from Carmen? No, Hiccup had already offered to take him back... Maybe he was just overthinking this.]

Are you...telling me that Carmen's sad?

[He sounds pretty uncertain.]

I don't know why they'd all leave at once...

[Without even bugging him about playing with them.]

A few hours, I think. I don't know exactly how long it's been--I was gone this morning.

[Guess who doesn't appreciate this.]

I wasn't trying to lose them, you know.

[There's a small pause.]

The first time it...wasn't pokemon. It happened back home.

If I knew that, I would undo it.

Lack of attention I guess.

[VIGOROUS NODDING. Okay, part one of the message was received. Now to find a way to succinctly and accurately convey part two.

...how in the world do you mime, "FIX IT".

Maybe Hiccup will figure it out from context if he attempts part three.]

[He whaps his little claws against his brand new grownup Charmeleon chest, tail flicking back and forth from the effort, and then rises up on tiptoes to suggest "tall". Miles - me - grownup.

#HELPING.

He flicks his tail up and over his head again — that worked pretty well for "Carmen" before — and then pulls his face into a twitching dragonish approximation of a human smile, followed up by a hopeful look.

MILES - ME - GROWNUP. MOM HAPPY?]

Maybe they didn't leave of their own will.

[He hopes not, though.]

I'd offer to help look for them, but since there's no place called the Dragon's Den around here I doubt I'd find anything.

[She takes it all in before responding this time.] Sounds like maybe they just went to have some fun, or maybe they came looking for you.

[Still, seems a little strange he didn't take them with.]

Are they used to being left alone?

Have you decided on a course of action to take from here, then? Will you go after them? Or simply let them go?

[WILL THOU BE A MAN OR A NOODLE?]

[Hiccup sighs.]

I'll try to find them. Maybe see if my friends can help me--but if they don't want to be found, there isn't much I can do about that.

[Mostly noodle.]

Someone thought they might have been stolen... But then why not take their pokeballs?

[Not like they could all have been nabbed individually, if they'd gone out... That'd just be extremely bad luck.]

Thanks anyway... But yeah, not much to be done, if you're not in Blackthorn...

[Oh, he was right... Welp. Hiccup sighs, shoulders slumping a little (which Leap isn't all too pleased about, as he has to adjust his perch.)]

Yeah, bud, I know...

[Carmen being sad wasn't worrying just Miles, after all. But Hiccup goes back to paying attention when he sees the reptile continuing his pantomiming. Seems it was getting more difficult.]

You...getting bigger...Carmen...smile. You...evolved to make her happy again?

I could see some of them doing that, but...

[There were certain others that wouldn't, he's pretty sure.]

Sometimes. I have more than six, so most of them stay at the inn while I go out. I've stayed away longer, before now, and they didn't leave then.

You have been ignoring them?

Not on purpose. There was a situation with some dragons I had to take care of. Maybe they thought it wasn't worth it to wait around for me to notice them, anymore.

And that still doesn't mean your Pokemon aren't, you know. You just never quite know!

I'd know more about them than you would. I don't think they'd go off just for some stupid trap or joke.

[And just look at that big proud (shy) Charmeleon smile. Growing up is scary and he is not entirely sure if he likes it! But some things are more important than fear, and one of them is Mommy. :c ]

Maa!

[And he really does manage about three seconds of bravery before self-consciousness gets the better of him and he starts looking all nervous and apprehensive again.]

[He raises a brow at that, not that Hiccup could see. But he huffs.]

What makes you think they won't?

If it's of any help, I'll keep an eye out for any reports of, ah, large clusters of wayward Pokemon fitting the description of the ones you lost. Unlikely though it might be that they get as far as another city, an extra set of eyes couldn't hurt. And in any case, Pokemon news in general frequently passes amongst the nurses anyway. If I hear something, I'll make certain to pass it on.
