[Among the background bustle--familiar sounds for anyone who's set foot in a Pokemon Center--there's a small whine from an Eevee, almost like a prompt for Hiccup to speak. After another second or so, he does.]

Uh... Has anyone ever, uhmm. [There's another pause. How should he put this...] Lost...half their pokemon? [He clears his throat before continuing, quicker this time like an excuse.] I still have all their pokeballs, and those are registered to all of them still, according to the people at the Center. But I can't find them anywhere...

[Hiccup sighs, and there's a subtle clunk as he moves his hand to the 'gear to shut it off. Before he does, though, there's one last mumble.]

I can't believe this is happening again...

Well, where are you? If I'm close by I can help you look? Are you anywhere near Cianwood?

...No. I'm on the opposite side of Johto--Blackthorn City.

[Though wow, he'd (temporarily) lost something important in Cianwood when he'd been there, too. Whoops.]

[And somehow, Hiccup's voice manages to become even gloomier.]

...Yeah. Toothless.

If there is a reason, I don't know it. And I don't know if they're going to come back.

They don't seem that dependent... Not on the same level as some of my other pokemon, anyway. But no, they hadn't tried getting my attention unless i just didn't notice them.

You...do realize how bad that last part sounded, right?

[Like, he wanted to audibly wince when he heard that.]

But if you don't know the reason, then there is still every chance that they might.

[Spoken with all the surety of an optimist.]

W-well...

[He didn't want to rule out the possibility. That just seemed irresponsible.

I mean, you can't always know, right? If you're...distracted, or whatever.

[Hiccup wishes he could be as optimistic as you, Temeraire.]

I guess... [Slight pause.] Have you ever thought about it, back home? Running away, I mean.

[Since you're a dragon, and all.]

No, never. I would rather be with Laurence than have all the nicest treasures in the world, I would not run away from him for anything.

[There's a pause, and he sounds gloomier himself when he starts talking again. He misses Laurence so much it hurts.]

But if I ever did have to go somewhere he could not, I would try to explain first...and if I could not, I would hope that he knows that I would return as soon as I could.

[And then Hiccup is quiet for a bit because he can't figure out if that makes him feel better or worse. Not taking into account for his time in this world, it had been three days since Toothless had left. Who knew how long his pokemon would be gone?

Oh well.]

What was he like, if you don't mind me asking?

Crap... well, I'm sure you'll find them if you keep looking. Don't give up until you've gotten some answers.

[A beat, and then finally she asks--]

You didn't have a fight with them before you left, right?

Why would I fight with my pokemon?

[It was one thing to imagine them angry at him for whatever reason, and something entirely different to imagine arguing with them.]

Maybe they're back there? At the den.

Not unless they snuck it while I was leaving.

[Pause. Well, technically...]

...Some will be there, though. Midgardsormr, Rockbiter, and the twins. And Fish and Flip. But that's their home, now. They're going to keep things in order.

[And yes, he does sound like he's regretting that a bit, now.]

[Astrid frowns.]

Wait you mean you left them there? For good?

Mhmn. [He sighs.] The dragons wanted to stay. It's practically dragon paradise over here, and without them, there could be another fight between the local dragons.

I always said I would release Fish, someday. He was never happy having a trainer--but I think he's glad he and Flip are free, now.

Oh man.

I can't imagine just...letting mine leave.

[Astrid is pretty attached to her pokemon.]

No, I gotcha...I think.

[He sounds very unsure about it. But he's willing to give the benefit of the doubt here.]

You could always check with your friends to see if they turned up there, or maybe your nearest PokeCenter. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you, man.

Well, I don't know. They don't always agree with what we tell them. [Hiccup you should see her with Konjo sometime. Srsly.]

[Hiccup shrugs.]

At least if they're here, I know where to come back to visit him.

[After a pause, he manages to offer her a weak smile.]

Sounds like you're almost used to this pokemon trainer thing.

I guess but...

[Still seemed extreme to him. Then again, he hadn't approached that one dragon since it bit him, and he had trained his Miltank specifically as an 'anti-Haunter' pokemon, after Carmen's Isabelle problem...]

It wasn't anything like that, though. Things seemed pretty normal to me.

[You're a good guy, Larry.]

Astrid hasn't seen them and I'm at the center. I'll have to check with Carmen later, but... Thanks anyway, I guess.

No problem. I hope you find 'em. I can't imagine what the feeling's like... Well, actually, I kinda can. It's basically like your friends have disappeared.

[Well that got a little too depressing for comfort. Larry clears his throat.]

A-Anyway, like I said, I hope they turn up. I'm sure they have to be around here somewhere.

[Huh. Sounds like something this guy's got experience in. Bringing that up would be pretty tactless, though...

Then again, whoever said Hiccup had tact?]

You had some friends go home recently, then? Or have you just been here a while?

[Luckily Larry's willing to talk about it. You can't just keep it all bottled up.]

Uh, I wouldn't say "recently." They've been gone for over a year by now. But yeah, I've been here a long time too.
