[Route, you have an unhappy viking on your hands.

See, while this viking had gone on to several people about how the cold sucks even if it reminded him of home, he wasn't really expecting a temperature change quite so soon, and definitely not so suddenly.

So here is Hiccup, changed out of his fur vest and standing barefoot inside a market. Judging by the looks the cashier is giving him, he's already been told that this is a bit unacceptable while shopping. But oh well, this brunette is buying fish. Again. He's been a good customer to the shop, given his ex-dragon friend's nutrition, and it's not like they're about to toss him out for not wearing shoes when he'll be out on his way soon enough. While waiting for his order to ring up, however, he gives the gear a pout.]

I thought this kind of thing wasn't supposed to happen until later in the year. You know, the whole melted snow and warm temperatures thing.

[Hiccup sticks to video, partly because it's what he's more used to, and partly because he thinks it would be silly to switch just because Rin replied using voice.]

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that it's still supposed to be winter, here, for a while yet.

[Rin just makes the switch with him. He hadn't realized he left the voice option open. Pardon him, he's new. Regardless, Hiccup's just answered an important question.]

So this Johto place has seasons, like any other place... besides it snowing yesterday, what else is weird?

Uh... Well, every creature hatching out of eggs is kind of strange. And my best friend not being a dragon anymore. That sure is weird.

But, uh, a warning about these seasons... I haven't been here that long myself, but I guess that this place likes extreme temperatures, and has a habit of crazy weather. Like storms and stuff.

[He scratches the side of his head, trying to think. Honestly, the entire world was pretty darn strange to him, so it was hard to pinpoint anything in particular.]

I don't really know how helpful I can be, but... If you had any specific questions, I could try to answer them.

[He didn't have much of a choice but to believe Hiccup at this point. Especially that 'best friend not being a dragon anymore' part. Time to focus on other things!]

That's cool that you know a dragon! I know a cat sith, but that's about it.

[He shrugs, not really too concerned with particular questions. He's willing to learn as he goes, but he appreciates the help.] ...You're being helpful enough. This place is weird enough as it is.

[Oh, good, he believes him! Hiccup got a bit tired of explaining that dragons are all over the place, in his world. So while he doesn't doubt what's in Rin's own world...]

What's a cat sith?

It's like a regular cat, except it has two tails and acts as a guardian for some places. The one I know used to be regarded as a god for keeping rats away from silk worms.

[He would only know this because he did his best to commit to his work.]

Woah... That sounds like a pretty neat cat, then. Really intelligent, too, like Toothless.

He is. His name's Kuro. Who's Toothless?

Oh! Uh, Toothless is my friend. The dragon. [After a pause, he gets a slightly-proud look on his face.] I named him.

Yeah, this is really weird. It's still the beginning of February, and spring doesn't usually start until the end of March.

[Ughhhh. Well, at least it's unusual. Doesn't make the lack of chilly temperatures any more comforting, though.]

Does anyone know what's going on? Because I wasn't prepared at all for this...

I haven't heard anything, but I'm sure we'll find out sooner or later.

Yeah, I guess... Sooner rather than later would be good, though, you know? In fact, if things could just be normal for once, it'd...be great.

... Though I guess the winter here was normal for here.

I guess it's good for me to get a taste of what's in store once summer rolls around, but... Ugh.

But...why? It's all wet and gross, and at least when it's cold you can just get some thicker furs. What are you supposed to do for when it's hot out?

I went outside in the cold all the time. It wasn't really that bad, most days. But I can't even imagine it getting any worse than this weather...

How can you not have winter? I mean, even Berk has all those other seasons.

At some point of the year it becomes a little chillier than usual, but never anything extreme like this.

...I'm going to go out on a limb and say that that's your home's winter. Just a guess.

Yeah usually it doesn't warm up for another month or so. This time last year it was pretty much frozen outside still. It's kinda weird.

[He's not exactly pleased but he's not exactly complaining, either. After all, it could be worse. Could be a Johto summer.]

I wonder why the heat came early, then... Besides, the weather was just fine the way it was yesterday. What's with the sudden change?

I don't know...but it wouldn't be the first time something odd has happened here before. Especially as far as the weather is concerned.

[Because summer is too hot and Dave gets to make fun of him for being a heat weenie. He much prefers the colder weather so he can make fun of Dave for being a snow weenie. Boys will be boys.]

[Hiccup wouldn't really know. He never got to call another boy a weenie. He was always the weenie.]

I wouldn't mind another Christmas. It actually took me awhile to get what it was, so I didn't really get to enjoy it very much. It goes by a different name, back home.

[John will have to introduce him to Dave. He is the biggest snow weenie you will ever meet. It can be a bonding experience.]

You're not the only one. [A chuckle.] Most of my friends didn't know what it was either. But they're all aliens so it makes sense. But what do they call it where you come from?

Snoggletog. I mean, it's the closest comparison I could make, so I would guess that's what it is.

Snoggletog, huh? That's an interesting name! And it...actually does kind of sound Christmas-y. Or maybe I'm just thinking that because it rhymes with eggnog. But how do you celebrate it?

[If Hiccup had tried yaknog at his point in his timeline, he would be awfully wary of that eggnog. Oh, the things the future holds.]

We make a model of a tree using wood we've painted green and nail our more colorful shields on it to decorate it. And we decorate our houses, too. At night we put out our helmets for Odin to fill. Plus, seeing as it's our winter holiday, it sure seems to fall in line with Christmas.

Sounds close enough to me! By helmets though do you mean like...bike helmets orrrr...?

[What kind of helmets are we talking about here? Because as weird as stockings are, helmets seem a little odd. And John hasn't quite yet pieced together that he's talking to a Viking. Herp derp.]

[There's a small pause as Hiccup tries to figure out if he can accurately explain it before he remembers something. He sets the gear down on the counter, digging into his bag and pulling out his item drop for Christmas--the helmet his dad gave him. Hiccup hesitates only slightly before placing it on his head.]

This one's a little big for me, but... It's mine. My helmet.

...What's a bike?

Oh like a Vik...ing... [And this is where John makes the startling realization that he's talking to a Viking. Wooooaaahhh.]

Wow I feel a little silly for not thinking of that. I mean with the cold and the shields and the helmet and...haha. Okay never mind. Um but a bike is like...a two-wheeled transportation device. So that you can get around faster than walking. They sell them in Goldenrod but I don't actually have one myself since I have a few pokemon that are big enough to ride on. Otherwise I would show you what they look like.

[Yes, like a viking! Hiccup gives a sheepish smile.] Exactly. I may not be the most stellar example, but where I come from, we're all vikings.

[Hiccup frowns a bit while he thinks, index tapping a few times at his chin. Now that John mentions it, he's seen devices like those!]

Ah, so that's what they're called... I was wondering. [He brightens after a moment, eyes curious.] Is there a machine like that, except capable of flight, here?
